The government of Uttar Pradesh has increased the minimum wages after laborers working in factories in Noida and neighboring industrial areas went on strike. As suggested by a special committee set up by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the revised wages will be applicable from April 1. Uttar Pradesh has categorized the new minimum wage rates into three zones – Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, municipal corporation area other than that, and other districts.
As per the new wages, the monthly remuneration of unskilled laborers in Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad would be ₹13,690 against ₹11,313 before. Similarly, the rate of payment of semi-skilled laborers would be ₹15,059 as compared to ₹12,445 earlier. Workers classified as skilled would get ₹16,868 instead of ₹13,940 before. In other municipal corporation areas, the rate would be lower than those in Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad but higher than before.
The salary increment may indicate an increase in the operational cost of businesses operating in Uttar Pradesh, especially those engaged in manufacturing, such as electronics, automotive parts, and textiles. Those firms that operate out of NSE or BSE listed firms, located in Noida or Ghaziabad, might experience margin pressure in the near future due to rising labor costs. Nevertheless, the move is anticipated to boost consumption in the region, thanks to higher disposable income of the workforce that translates into greater demand from FMCG and retail businesses.
Looking ahead, investors have to watch for any reaction from businesses regarding the new pay scheme during quarterly earnings releases and company commentary sessions. In addition, more wage hikes from the authorities might emerge in the future, thus affecting the inflation rate and even interest rates, while industrial output in the Noida-Ghaziabad area might be monitored as well to check if there are any implications for the manufacturing sector.
