The Department of Telecommunications has directed its regional branches to coordinate with respective states’ administrations to ensure a steady supply of diesel at mobile towers in light of the growing fuel shortage situation in connection with the unfolding Iran imbroglio. In an internal note, senior officials noted that the prohibition on the sale of diesel in bulk amounts in some states has started impacting ground-level operations, especially in areas where telecom network operations rely extensively on diesel generators.
As per officials, the problem has emerged in states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and even in some parts of the northeast, where diesel plays a crucial role in sustaining connectivity at telecom towers during power cuts. The issue was officially brought up by the Digital Infrastructure Providers Association, a leading industry association that caters to telecom tower companies serving networks of operators including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and others run by the government.
Investors should note that there exists an operational risk to the telecoms industry at a time when operators are making huge investments into rolling out 5G networks. As discussed before, telecom services depend on continuous power supply. Diesel engines are used as a secondary source of powering the networks in areas where electricity is not reliable. Therefore, a long-term inability to access fuel can result in network down times leading to poor service delivery. On the NSE and BSE indices, the stock values of telecom companies are likely to be volatile depending on whether the challenge persists, resulting in high operating costs from rising fuel prices.
In conclusion, investors should observe possible government intervention in ensuring fuel supplies are adequate and relaxed policies on the sale of diesel. In terms of operational disclosures, the telecom companies are likely to inform investors on their cost pressure through announcements. The dynamics of crude oil price and geopolitical happenings are likely to determine the availability and price of diesel.
